Most people believe in the existence of God. In fact it is said that around ninety percent of American’s believe in God. Not to many people are atheists. If you believe in God, do you just stop at that point? Weather you choose to or not, you will begin to move in a direction. The opinions you begin to develop will shape your life and the way your life impacts others, ultimately impacting how all of society will be. There may be a God, but did He create the earth and all that is in it? If so, how did he do that? Not only that, but if He did create it all, how has He and is He interacting with His creation today? There have been a large number of explanations to the earth’s existence. Some state that it evolved from nothing without a God and some say that God started it, but it evolved from there. The former is called evolution and the latter is called theistic evolution, which would include “The Big Bang Theory.” Lastly, however, is the concept of creationism. It is the belief that God created the earth and everything in it and is still actively involved in sustaining his creation today. Many creationists believe that “The Big Bang Theory” is just a discovery that something started it all and that something is God. Creationists view that theory as a confirmation of creationism.
Let us begin with what is said in the Bible. If you were to take the Bible as the truth, you would believe that God created the earth and all that is in it. It states “God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Genesis one also reveals that He also made the plants (vs. 11-12), stars (vs. 14), the sun (vs. 16), the moon (vs. 16), water animals (vs. 20), birds (vs. 20), all land animals (vs. 24-25), and people (vs. 26). He did not create them in forms that transformed to something else later. Plants were plants, water animals were water animals, land animals were land animals, and people were people. It is this reason that it consistently says they reproduced “after their kind” (Genesis 1:12, 21, 24-25). There are other parts of the Bible that declare God as the creator of all creation as well (Psalm 33:6; Jeremiah 10:12; John 1:3; Acts 14:15; Hebrews 3:4; and Revelation 4:11). The Bible is explicitly clear that God created the earth and all that is in it.
Not only is the Bible explicitly clear that God created the earth, but He also sustains it even to this day. The Bible declares that Jesus “is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17). It also says that Jesus “upholds all things by the word of His power” (Hebrews 1:3). The world came into existence by God and continues to exist by God. God both created His creation and He maintains it.
Let us consider some philosophical thoughts. In considering philosophical arguments and more types of arguments later in this lesson, I am not implying that the Bible doesn’t settle the issue. Indeed, if the Bible says it, then that settles it. However, since we have not discussed the evidence for the Bible being truth, which we will do in the next lesson, we will now consider additional evidence to creation.
The very existence of creation implies that there is a creator. In fact even the Bible points this out by saying, “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands” (Psalm 19:1) and “since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made” (Romans 1:20). When we consider the complexity of this earth and the life on it, it is hard to explain it without a creator. When we think about human intelligence and the conscience that we have, it is hard to explain without a creator. Try to explain the existence of love without a creator and you will find that it is very difficult. Even the existence of evil cannot get rid of the loud voice of love. Where did it come from?
You may see a watch somewhere, but you would not insist that it just appeared that way without a maker. You may see some squiggly lines on the sands of a beach and be able to believe that there was no intentional design; it just happened. However, if you saw the phrase “Johnny loves Suzy,” written in the sand you would know that someone wrote that there. If you saw a slight resemblance to a man in a rock, you would think it was a coincidence. However, when you look at Mount Rushmore, you know that someone created that design. When someone sees mold on bread that appears to resemble Mary, many would believe that it was a coincidence. However, when you see a clearly defined animated picture of a city on paper, you believe that someone made that. Why is it then that some look at all of creation and believe it just happened? The more a person studies science and the complexity of life, the more difficult it should be to deny that God created it. It is that reason that Paul said that God’s work has “been clearly seen…through what has been made” (Romans 1:20).
There are so many contradictions, illogical thoughts, and inaccurate science practices in the theory of evolution. Though it is being paraded around in our public schools as fact, it is still only a theory, because it has not been established by scientific evidence as fact. There are a number of wonderful groups that have helped to show the scientific flaws of evolution and the evidence for creation. Below are some links to sites that provide that information. Please make use of the material now to get a good understanding of the evidence. Also, I highly recommend reading The Case for a Creator by Lee Strobel.
